Dennis Joyce

“We are very sorry to report that Dennis Joyce, one of our prominent players of the post-war era, passed away recently. Dennis joined our Juniors in 1950 and went on to make his first team debut at Walthamstow Avenue in November 1954. A tall and commanding defender, he became one of the best centre halves around in amateur football, and played representative games for London, Surrey and the Isthmian League. He was also a key member of the Hamlet side that reached the semi-finals of the FA Amateur Cup, finished runners-up in the Isthmian League and won the Surrey Senior Cup. He left for Bromley in 1959 and spent four seasons there before retuning to Dulwich in 1963. He took his first team appearances for the club to 221 (9 goals), but sadly he broke his ankle in an FA Amateur Cup tie at Finchley on New Year’s Day 1966 and never played again. He maintained his interest in the club though and in recent years had been a keen member of our Vice Presidents Club. We extend our sincere condolences to his daughter, Rachel, at this sad time.”
